In my case, my goal in my marketing and consulting business (as opposed to the personal training gym that I own and my International boot camp business) is this: to help at least 1,000 fitness professionals make the amount of income they want, no matter where they choose to work or set up their own businesses.You might think this is a lofty goal, but it’s a goal I know I can reach. Heck, it’s the challenge of it that keeps me motivated. More importantly, helping out others with fitness boot camp marketing tips keeps me working towards what’s really important – not the money (though that is always nice), but my goal of helping at least 1,000 people in the fitness industry. I know I can better the lives of my fellow fitness professionals and it would be selfish for me to keep all of this advice to myself.I look at it this way – my goal goes beyond the 1,000 fitness pros I’m giving fitness boot camp marketing tips and coaching to. It also helps all of the people who they help to get into shape. Additionally, the fitness trainers’ boosted income allows them and their families to lead a better life and contribute more to society – I hope all of you get what I’m saying here. It’s really a helping hand that keeps giving and giving.Those of us in the fitness industry are truly lucky to be able to help so many people and affect so many lives; it’s why I really love working in this industry. It’s the reason why I chose to have my own business instead of working at some corporate gym that has all of these strict rules that benefit the company instead of keeping the clients their number one concern. Not everyone gets to make this much of an impact on other people’s lives.Remember that your goals should be aimed towards helping others. While it’s fine to have goals for your own business, it’s more important to have a goal that is designed to contribute to society as a whole. All of us in the industry have probably thought about this quite a bit and I’d really like to hear some thoughts from all of you reading this. Many other fitness boot camp marketing tips out there don’t include this heartfelt, basic knowledge of knowing what you really want from having your own business, so if you’re starting to get frustrated with your business, take some time out of your busy day to remember why it is that you got started in this business in the first place.
I’m about to talk dirt on many of the “professionals” working in our industry these days. I don’t mean to talk about YOU…so hopefully you don’t make the cut for this list.Fitness trainers are lucky because we don’t have to spend day after day cramped in a tiny cubicle or inhaling fumes in a factory. We are out there in the trenches making people look their best, helping them to lead happier lives, feel more energetic, and hold their head high with confidence. Heck, we even make sure they have more (and better!) sex. As a trainer, you are touching every aspect of your client’s lives and making it one helluva lot better for them.In the same spirit, I want to talk about some weird things that go on WITHIN the fitness industry, since these things often give us all a… well, a WEIRD reputation. The following trainer personalities and situations can serve as humorous fitness marketing tips that we can all learn from in a backward kinda way.1. The trainer who’s doing more than just training his married female clients. Anyone who has worked in a gym knows whom I’m talking about!2. The trainer who uses each workouts session as a lesson in hearing himself talk…about himself! This guy is in need of these fitness marketing tips: shut up about yourself and your clients will like you more…and, get to know your clients half as well as you obviously want them to know you, and you would have triple the workload!3. The Know It All Trainer. This guy already knows everything there is to know about the fitness industry, so don’t try telling him ANYTHING!4. The flabby, couch-bound, pizza and beer gut trainer. This guy was in shape when he started, but now he’s been training for so long that he thinks he can get away with eating junk food and watching other people work out all day long. Shameful, I say!5. Large corporate gyms – can just anyone walk in off the street and get hired these days? Have you seen some of the newly hired at some of these places? They couldn’t tell a bicep from a toenail or a protein from a carb. Do they just hang their ‘now hiring’ signs and hope someone, anyone will respond?6. The trainer who charges so low a homeless man could afford ten sessions a week. Ten bucks for a workout? Unreal! This dude devalues the hell out everything this industry stands for and would be better suited to the McDonalds drive-through.7. The training shark. You have to watch out for this bastard as his goal is to steal as many clients from you as possible. I’ve seen quite a few of them… and I figure most of them will spend all of their time just playing catch-up!8. Johnny “Walk-it-Off.” So the client just blew a hernia? Tell him to walk it off. Dislocated his shoulder? Walk it off. Having a heart attack? You get the point…9. Miss Forehead Wiper spends all her time searching out towels, two pound dumbbells, and water bottles. She’s the one wiping the sweat off her client’s foreheads… like a servant or mommy’s helper, not a fitness trainer.10. The Perv. This is the guy every woman has to watch out for. Since he’s banned from being within 500 yards of any schoolyard and forever ruined his career as a teacher, he is now a personal fitness trainer. He’s the one who creeps out all the women in the gym by staring them up and down.Well, there ya have it… hopefully you didn’t find yourself anywhere on that list, but I’m sure you had a laugh at a few of your colleagues. My fitness marketing tip is to not be on this list!
Being a Health and Fitness Professional, it is my job to understand terms and definitions which are commonplace to this industry, as well to keep abreast of evolving trends. Through my experience, I have found that a number of terms deserve a little more clarification than that which they are granted.Aside from clarifying the definition of Health Related Fitness, this article intends to shed some light on a few of the associated terms, and to show their respective distinctions.Is it simply all in a name?The fitness world seems to use the concept Health Related Fitness like a generic fitness principle – interchangeable with others like “Physical Fitness”, “Health and Fitness” or simply “Fitness.”While all of these terms can be included under the broad term Health and Physical Fitness, they individually refer to different aspects – both generic and specific. Unfortunately, references to these and other fitness-related terms are often vague, while consistency in their intended use is meager at best; there is a kind of “generally accepted” use for them, but individuals often rely on own interpretation, and this can lead to confusion.With that said, does Health Related Fitness simply infer fitness by means of good health? Not quite. That is why we need to understand a little more behind these words before digesting the definition.How did the term Health Related Physical Fitness come about?That is a good question. One could probably ask what is this concept all about – can we not simply use the terms “Fitness” or “Physical Fitness” instead?” Why Health “Related”?The main reason stems from the fact that most health and fitness terms are used inconsistently and often refer to different concepts or notions. Subsequent to the 1996 report from the US Surgeon General (Physical Activity and Health; a report of the Surgeon General), there was a move to try and address the alarming rise in obesity levels among the general American public. Studies and initiatives required standardization among clinicians, health practitioners and fitness trainers to grapple with the task at hand. Enter “Health Related Physical Fitness”, a working term to address the general state of health among the public.The definition of Health Related FitnessAccording to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the main authority in this field, ineffective definitions with unclear and subjective wordings, as well as definitions containing terms which themselves require defining, have contributed to confusing the term “Physical Fitness.”There exists no reliable guide for Health and Fitness Professionals to measure “Physical Fitness”, because the term has been so loosely and inconsistently defined. It is therefore that one should consider the concept of Health Related Fitness. The definition therefore centers on the 5 Components of Physical Fitness which relate to “good health.” These Components are:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the definition of Physical Fitness emphasizes the difference between Health Related Physical Fitness and Athletic Ability Physical Fitness. Its point-of-departure is the “health” of the US nation, which is often referred to as the “public health perspective.” In that respect, the 5 Health Related Fitness Components are more important than those related to Athletic Ability (or Skill Related Components).Although the concept of Health Related Fitness has an integral association with “good health”, the 5 Components are addressed individually by health professionals to allow for their measurement.Now that we have a deeper understanding of the term, what purpose does it serve?Continuing from where the definition left off, the objective of measuring the 5 Components is to advise clients about their own particular Health Related Fitness, and to use data obtained from the tests to design appropriate exercise programs which can then be evaluated.The 5 Components contribute evenly to make up a holistic Health Related Fitness, which is of direct interest to the health of the ordinary citizen, in that the concept is normative. In other words, it is a standard which allows for consistent application.It is therefore important for those working in the health and fitness industry not to mistake “overall physical fitness” with “Health Related Physical fitness.”To conclude, let us consider this distinction between Physical Fitness and Health Related FitnessOne needs to bear in mind that regular physical exercise can improve overall Physical Fitness, as well as Health Related Fitness. However, overall fitness is a generic term and is up to subjective interpretation, while Health Related Fitness can be assessed.The distinction therefore, between these two terms, exists in that Health Related Physical Fitness can be measured according to a set of established comparative norms.This is where the “rubber hits the road.” The guidelines set out by the ACSM enable health professionals to work with clients to assess and measure their response to exercise and prescribe appropriate exercise programs. A client’s progress can then be monitored and adjusted where necessary in order to obtain the desired fitness goals.
When you start to think about the reasons why people don’t make the time to exercise, everything begins to sound like one excuse after another. But, if you take a closer look into the true psychology behind what is keeping people from getting their fitness in full swing; excuses are not the problem.As a matter of fact it’s gone beyond the ideas of inconvenience. It’s gone past the point of laziness. It’s gone past the point of excuses. It’s gone past the point of not having built a habit or having built a habit of not exercising. It has progressed beyond any and all of those stages. The concept of exercise and healthy habits has declined so much (an actual retrogression) that people have legitimately hard-wired their minds to avoid exercise.And this situation creates a significantly bigger and almost insurmountable obstacle to overcome, because the typical “motivational” or “convenience” approaches or solutions used by the fitness industry lack the finesse to overpower the human mind. Hence why most every exercise program fails and the individuals that purchase them never receive the intended results.The programs do in fact fail the people that buy them.It is not a simple matter of ‘motivating” people or making the workouts “convenient” to do based on time or location. It is so much bigger and deeper than that. The standard fitness program is designed from it’s inception to cause failure on behalf of the majority of people who buy them.Why? Because the mind is no longer wired to receive that type of stimulus. It is not ready to fire off all of those connectors or sustain the mindset of exercise and healthy eating and a wellness lifestyle.This is a problem that cannot be solved with “mind over matter” or cognitive thought or forced discipline. The type of memory needed to reinforce a repetitive lifestyle, has either never existed or the memory that has been built when it comes to fitness and health is bad or negative and counter productive.The solution? You need to rebuild, replace or install a new memory.You need to install a memory of exercise and health. This way when the time comes during the day for you to exercise, you won’t find yourself trying to work your way out of your workout.By installing this new memory of health and fitness you will be propelled to continue to workout and eat correctly because this new memory dictates, “this is who you are… working out is what you do.”The problem is that this memory has to be created instantly. This new memory has to be created with the same process that creates every memory you have. And this is the reason why most people that buy exercise and workout programs, equipment, gym memberships, DVD’s and weight loss pills and potions; end up quickly quitting and returning to their “old ways” of wellness, regardless of how much money they’ve spent or how advanced the breakthrough being branded.
The approach of the entire fitness world is “physical” in nature, with the idea of “psychology” as a simple emotional effect to motivate you.This approach doesn’t help to correct the main problem that I have previously described.The entire purpose of the industry is to create an environment that is conducive to people exercising and becoming fit. The “physical” only approach can’t correct the real deep down “psych” problem.These products and programs not only leave their buyer deflated and disinterested in their products and exercise, but it leaves them feeling negative about fitness in general. It also actually reinforces their current mental state because these so-called solutions are perceived as yet “another thing” they bought, that got their hopes up only to find it quickly end in failure.This “physical” only approach is perceived mainly as a way for these “celebrity instructors” to aggrandize themselves in the media and marketplace. The true benefit to the marketplace is never a central consideration when creating these programs.Michael Banks with his Body By Banks program stands apart from the entire industry and corrects this inaccurate dynamic that has been perpetuated for years.The Michael Banks method is different. He approaches fitness and wellness “first” from the psychological side and builds what I call “psych-traps” into the actual workouts in the form of verbal expressions, exercise movements, and the way he structures and schedules the actual workout.Since a person who doesn’t exercise either has no memory or a bad associative memory when it comes to exercise, health or fitness, Michael Bank’s unique approach (which you would never notice conscientiously, but the results prove it to be true) instantly builds or re-builds those neuro-connections and gets all of them firing within seconds of turning on his DVDs. In short, his “fitness therapy” approach instantly builds a memory that says, “I love to exercise, this is fun, I can do this! This is who I am.”This allows the mind to desire and want to repeat this feeling, thereby repetitively doing the workout, weight is lost and the person’s life changes forever.*All of this happens in 10 minutes… in the first DVD, which is during the most critical memory building stage of the mind called “the Chalkboard Phase” which is where we are installing hard and permanent memory into the hippocampus, which is the hard drive of the mind.Listed below are a series of “psych traps” that Michael uses during the first workout DVD called Total Body Transformation. Read them, then do the workout and see if you recognize them. Better yet, pay attention to how you feel from the beginning of the workout to the end and see if you too don’t get caught in his “trap”.Before I explain the actual “Psych Traps” Michael uses during his workouts, let me first explain your brains actual process for building a memory. This is important to understand because it will easily illustrate why Michaels programs create the type of results I have describe in the before mentioned text.Your Brains Process of Building a Memory0.2 seconds: Attention
Attention causes the neurons that register the event to fire more frequently. Such activity makes the experience more intense; it also increases the likelihood that the event will be encoded as a memory.0.25 seconds: Emotion
The emotional information increases attention. The emotional information from a stimulus is processed initially along an unconscious pathway that leads to the amygdala; this can produce an emotional response even before the person knows what they are reacting to, as in the “fight or flight” response. Pre-cognitive decision making.0.2-0.5 seconds: Sensation
Most memories derive from events that included sights, sounds and other sensory experiences. The more intense the sensations, the more likely it is that the experience is remembered.0.5 seconds -10 minutes: Working Memory – “Chalkboard Phase”
Short-term or “working” memory is like text on a blackboard that is constantly refreshed. Working memory is thought to involve two neural circuits around which the information is kept alive for as long as it is needed. One circuit is for visual and spatial information, and the other for sound.10 minutes-2 years: Hippocampal processing
Particularly striking experiences cause neural activity that loops around coiled layers of tissue; the hippocampal neurons start to encode this information permanently by a process called long-term potentiation. The strongest information “plays back” to the parts of the brain that first registered it.2 years onward: Consolidation
It takes up to two years for a memory to become firmly consolidated in the brain; the neural firing patterns that encode an experience are played back and forth between the hippocampus and the cortex. This prolonged, repetitive “dialogue” causes the patterns to be shifted from the hippocampus to the cortex. The dialogue takes place largely during sleep.The Body By Banks Psych-TrapsHere are some of the things you might notice during a workout with Michael banks. I will explain the significance of each of these “Psych Traps.”"Only 10 minutes!” – Michael keeps repeating this phrase throughout the workout. The result is that your mind remembers that the workout is short and sweet and can be fit anywhere into your day. Many times when people are just watching the workout the response is, “Hey… I could have already been halfway through!” They then immediately get up and start doing the workout.In addition, the number 10 has certain symbolism. It is one of 4 perfect numbers (3,7, 10, 12) It also is symbolic of completeness and order and that they cycle is complete. It is the same number as the number of fingers and toes. Since the beginning we have grown up using our fingers to count. This is our simple math. Being able to use that kind of associative memory is a great “psych trap” for helping us feel that working out and being fit is childlike simple and easy.10 repetitions per exercise – Based on the same symbolism, which repetitively reinforces the ease and simplicity of the program.”Fun and simple” – Michael mentions the word fun and or simple at least 17 times in the first DVD workout. This is more than one repetition per minute. He keeps verbally repetitively reinforcing that this IS fun and simple. You are starting to see that Michael is using all of the senses to get all of your neuro-connections firing at the same time. This more easily reinforces and builds a new memory of fitness success or replaces a bad one.”Relax!” – The word relax doesn’t seem to fit into a workout program. As a matter of fact most programs are doing the exact opposite. Yelling at you to “get off your butt!” These typical instructors are similar to an old school, hard-nosed Marine drill sergeant. Not effective at all for the majority of the marketplace. By telling you to “relax” your mind has hard wired memories attached to the word “relax”, and it instantly brings up the feelings of relaxation, which allows you to not feel like you are working hard when you actually are. It’s a more advance version of reverse psychology plus distractionary technique.”You and I, everyday” – This is so personable of an approach that it helps people feel that Michael is there for them… there with them, supporting them everyday. He is talking to you saying, “I am here with you. It’s you and I… every day!”"Wait! Stay there!” – This is a great technique that keeps you off balance psychologically and creates a push and pull situation in the mind. Several times during the workout right when Michael’s got you excited and you are ready to move to the next exercise… Michael tells you “Stop! Wait! I know you’re excited…” This verbal “psych-trap” reinforces the concept of relax and take your time, don’t push yourself and at the same time, makes you even more, want to push on. It’s brilliant!
“Take a seat!” – This is one of the biggest “psych-traps” used in Michaels programs. He uses this 6 times in his first DVD workout. From our earliest days we have heard the words, “Take a seat.” From our teachers, to any meeting or one-on-one situation where we are being instructed, we have heard the words, “Take a seat.” And every time we heard those words, we took a seat and we heard our minds say, “great… time to relax.”Our minds are hard wired and our long- term memory that send chemicals to the brain that makes you feel like it’s over it’s time to chill or relax. An even more advanced version of reverse psychology and a distractionary technique. It makes the workout go by extremely quick and make you feel like you didn’t really workout at all. Then a little later that day, or the next morning… you start to realize, “Hey! I did workout! Let’s do that again!”This is just a few of the “psych-traps” that Michael Banks uses in his fitness programs. His background in psychology really shows when you start to understand the breakdown of his unnoticeable approach to helping you create the kind of healthy life you desire. One secret of success in sales and marketing prospecting is to become fluent in the language of your customers and their industries. You need to fit in with them in their worlds. This is important to all salespeople and marketers, not just to soft sell sales and marketing people.The First Step Is to Decide Who Your Ideal Prospects AreTo get established in your sales and marketing efforts, start by studying up on your ideal customers’ market or industry. If you have several different ideal customer profiles, pick one that you are most interested in, one which has a sizable potential for sales. Becoming an expert in an industry takes time and effort so be smart about your choice. Remember, your ideal prospects are companies like your best customers because they are most likely to have needs like those you are solving already.Next, Learn about Their Industry or MarketOnce you choose where you want to initially focus, start reading up as much as you can about it. Naturally, the Internet has a wealth of information on almost everything imaginable. The problem is that not all of it is accurate or true so you need to read broadly. A great source of information is to get a subscription to industry publications, most of which are free to people in that industry, including vendors. Also, get involved in one of the trade associations – one to which the people you want to contact actually attend.Your Goals for this ResearchThere are at least three purposes to your doing this research and getting involved in a low key way.
Learn the jargon, the words and expressions used in that industry so you blend in as one of them. Don’t just parrot the words. Be sure you understand what they mean and how they are used. Being an expert means you know the language. Every industry has terms unique to it. For instance, “flooring” to automobile dealerships refers to the manufacturers’ short term financing of inventory while to a housing contractor, it would mean what you lay down for people to walk on.
Find out what’s important to the people you want to reach, i.e. what are the challenges they are experiencing that they want help with. This will enable you to look for solutions you can deliver that people actively want. It may be as simple as reframing how you approach what your product already does, or it may require adding something, like installation and training to your package or bundling someone else’s product to make a kit.
Become known as someone who contributes to his or her community. Volunteer for a committee where you are able to offer help. Unless you have a booth or table display at vendors’ night, be really low key about selling at most meetings. People want to get to know, like and trust you as a person first – that’s right, this idea predates the Internet. I found when I was in credit union computer system sales that managers who’d met me at several chapter meetings were likely to see me on a cold call because they recognized me and my commitment to their movement.Knowing How to Fit in Gives You a Base to Ask Intelligent QuestionsIf you want to fit in with your prospects, get to know their industry or market. Use their jargon properly yet sparingly. You want to blend as one of them. Read, listen, and learn what the members of this community care about. Then you will be able to offer a solution that they already know they want. Don’t forget, though, your heart-centered, soft sell sales approach means this industry information is only foundational so you fit in. You still need to ask prospective customers about their specific needs and interests. Then you’ll find sales fun, fulfilling, and mutually rewarding.
If you are unfamiliar with supplements, trying to buy them can be confusing and overwhelming, because there are so many different brands and products, with new ones coming out all the time. There are currently so many products that it is practically impossible to keep track of everything. Even people who work in the supplement industry tend to specialize in certain areas, such as vitamins/minerals, sports supplements, herbs, etc.Supplements can also be confusing, because depending on who you talk to, you can get very different opinions. Many people have extreme or biased views of supplements, with people on one side saying everyone needs to take many different supplements and people on the other side saying all supplements are worthless. As with most issues, the truth is somewhere in between. There are certainly some great supplements available, but many products are essentially worthless, and others have some positive benefits, but are not worth the price you pay for them.Perhaps the greatest amount of supplement confusion stems from the marketing tactics companies use to promote their products, especially in magazines. Many health and fitness magazines are owned by the same company as the products that are advertised in the magazine and even some of the articles are designed to promote their own brand of products. When I worked in supplement stores I frequently spoke with people about supplements and it was interesting that many people had biased views towards or against certain brands based on which magazines they read.To make matters worse, supplement marketing often sites scientific research to add credibility to products, but this information is rarely presented in an honest and straightforward way. In many cases, the studies are poorly done, financed by the supplement company, have results that have been refuted by many other studies, or they have nothing to do with the product being sold. Unfortunately, the only way to find out if the studies and claims are legitimate is to find and read the original study, but this would be a daunting task even for people in the industry. Of course, supplement companies are well aware of that fact and they expect that people will not fact check their claims.By quoting information from scientific studies, companies often try to make their products sound better than they actually are. The interesting thing is both reputable and disreputable companies use this tactic to help market their products. The difference between the good and bad companies is reputable companies put quality ingredients in their products and the labels contain accurate information. Disreputable supplement companies may have lower amounts of ingredients than the label claims or their supplements may not even contain some of the listed ingredients at all.Companies frequently get away with making questionable claims or lying about how much of an ingredient is in a product, because the supplement industry is not government regulated. However, while the product itself is not regulated, there is some regulation about what information can appear on a label. For instance, companies are not allowed to make any claims about products preventing or curing diseases. Instead they have to make what are called “structure/function” claims.A structure/function claim would be something like a calcium supplement label stating that “calcium is necessary for strong bones.” The label is not supposed to state “this supplement helps prevent osteoporosis.” Any supplement that references diseases such as osteoporosis must also include a statement like, “This supplement is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” These statements are required, because government regulations say that only a drug can make claims about preventing or treating diseases.These statements/labels sometimes cause confusion, because your doctor may tell you to take calcium supplements to help with osteoporosis, but when you go to buy it, it likely says it is not meant to prevent any disease (including osteoporosis). Of course, it is ludicrous to think that a good calcium supplement doesn’t help prevent osteoporosis, but government regulations and particularly the drug industry, want people to think that only drugs are effective in preventing or treating medical problems.Another label requirement that often causes confusion is when a product states it is a “dietary supplement.” When people see the term dietary supplement, they sometimes think it is for dieting, but every supplement is classified as a dietary supplement and it has nothing to do with dieting or weight loss. The only thing it means is the item is not a natural whole food. The dietary supplement term is basically used to distinguish between foods, which are regulated by the FDA, and supplements, which are not regulated by the FDA.These types of regulations and other messages from the government or the drug industry have greatly contributed to people believing that supplements are useless and just a scam. Some definitely are a scam, such as those saying things like, “take this pill and have a great body without changing what you eat or exercising.” Fortunately, enough quality scientific research has now been done to show that some supplements can significantly benefit your health and fitness so fewer people are adamantly opposed to supplements and more people are willing to use supplements.On a personal note, I have used supplements for about as long as I can remember, although I take significantly less than I did 10 years ago. I believe most people can probably benefit from at least one or two supplements, but there are also many people who take too many supplements. As their name implies, supplements are meant to be an addition to your regular nutritional program, basically to fill in things that are lacking from the foods you eat, but they should not be thought of as a replacement for eating healthy.Supplements are also frequently used for their convenience, especially things like meal replacements and protein powders, but these products don’t necessarily have more benefits than eating healthy well-balanced meals. When deciding whether or not to use a supplement, it is important to have realistic expectations about what the supplement will do for you, then determine if the benefits are worth the cost. This may be something that will be difficult for you to do at this point, but in future writings I will cover more specific information about supplements to help you figure out what supplements, if any, will help you reach your health and fitness goals.
Start at the End and work BackwardsFor anyone keen enough to handle their own design and industrial building project, this is a good, professional check list which will help you. Equipment plays a vital role and you must adopt a stitch in time approach which will help you to deliver on time, and in time, to your expectation. Setting unachievable deadlines which produce late and uncontrollable costs at the end of the project can be avoided when you are aware of what steps to take and the order of events. This article provides a typical key headings list for industrial buildings and also covers ground works.What to put on your ListThis may all seem rather obvious but you would be surprised at just how many people forget to book the supply of services or discover well into the project that they have an 8 month wait for electricity or have to pay to pipe in water. By listing out all the tasks, equipment, services and deadlines you can prioritise and plan events and not miss anything out. The most important aspect is the order of events. Over the past 15 years I have seen a lot of gimmicks and tricks in the fitness industry. The amount of misinformation that floats around out there is scary. The flashy concepts, that have no roots in exercise science, are market to us by the pretty people. The new machine that will finally change your body, the next best exercise, it just goes on and on. Just the other day a person called asking about a ‘Hollywood’ workout that is guaranteed to build you a six pack abs in just 30 days. This person was so sold on the idea of getting ripped abs in just 30 days that they could not see the fact that they were being sold a dream, a dream that will ultimately damage your body.The sad fact is that the majority of the exercises and programs available commercially and designed by ‘experts’ are poorly designed, use dangerous exercises and simply wear the body down to the point of failure. I will spare you the rant on why the programs and specifically the exercises are wrong and even dangerous, read my past articles for that.Truth # 1Nothing is guaranteed. If the product you are interested in makes a guarantee they are trying to sell you something. The old adage is true, there are no guarantees in life. No matter how good the exercise is, how well the program is designed, how strong the machine is made, no one can account for all the variables. Sleep-diet-stress-intensity-volume-technique-fatigue all factor into the equation.Truth # 2Machines do not work. I have stated this many times before, the research (in accredited/peer reviewed journals) supports this. Your body was not designed to contort into a machine and be forced to move in a set pattern. To buy a machine or spend the majority of your workout sitting on one will cause you to fail, quickly. As I tell all the athletes I train when they ask why we do not bench press “if you are staring at the sky (on the field/court) you lost, exercising laying or sitting is useless on the field”Truth # 3There is no magic supplement. Do you honestly believe that a fruit from the Amazon will cure all disease? Is there a little known mineral that prevents X ? I do not discount that some of these products that are loaded with antioxidants and minerals, I personally use some but the take home message is the more boastful the claim and the more unsubstantiated the research the more they are trying to sell you a dream. Many of the products do contain these ‘super foods’ but the concentration is so minimal that most of the benefit is negated by the lack of dosage. Buyer beware, there are some good ones out there but please do your homework.Truth # 4Wellness is in your head. Ask any psychologist about the power of positive thinking and they will tell you that to think healthy will enable you to be healthy. To constantly think healthy allows you to effortlessly be healthy, it is easy to make healthy choices in diet, exercise daily, fight off illness and be happy if you have positive thoughts. Think your way to a positive lifestyle and the barriers will fall.Truth # 5Just do it! Nike has it right. To simply move, to do, to be, to function, to not make excuses, to be informed, to not be sold a dream……There are a million reasons to be fit and healthy and just as many gimmicks and machines to make sure that you fail. The simple fact is that to establish a routine, follow it and live it and you will have success. If you spend your time looking for the next great fitness revolution and it just adds to the pile in the basement of the dusty old ‘next best exercise machine’ than change has yet to occur.Your body needs constant change, it can never be allowed to adapt, if you are bored so is your body. There are many on line trainers, programs, videos etc., some are good and some not so much. Please do not be fooled by the flashy programs or the Hollywood workouts, they make you look good and feel bad. Some of the best exercises are nothing fancy and many of the flashy exercises are nothing but dangerous. Fitness and wellness are a self fulfilling prophecy, if you feel good you are more apt to be fit, if you feel bad then the answer is obvious.The definition if insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, does this apply to your exercise routine or diet?
